NaNoWriMo: Who's With Me? (Word Count: 4106)

Monday, October 20, 2008, 10:54 PM

Inspired by my friend Cindy, I have signed up for NaNoWriMo 2009, a worldwide event (despite the National in the title) where participants attempt to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. I'll admit up front that I'm kind of cheating because I already have a few thousand words written, but I think it'll act as encouragement to get cracking on my new book. I'm hoping to have the guts of the first draft done before Christmas. In the past I've always maintained a word count on this blog as I've blundered my way through a project, and I'll do the same this time.

Anyway, I'm registered at www.nanowrimo.org as Stuart_Neville, so if anyone wants to add me as a buddy, please do.

All right, all right, you and Cindy are just showing off now.

No, seriously, I had hoped to NaNo this year, but it's not going to happen. I've been collecting some pieces of advice, but you guys probably already have your method down. *sigh* Oh, you crazy authors. (And mostly, there, I'm talking about Ello, whom you didn't even mention, but still.)

Best of luck!!

Dilettante. I did the Three Day Novel Contest once.

(Um. And produced 50,000 words of blithering caca...)

Cheat! ;)

I would love to do NaNo but the timing isn’t good. So I'll sit on the sidelines and cheer people on.

Lots of luck!

You know, I might have a wee go at this. I've avoided it in the past because it goes against all my writing methods (not editing as you go especially), but the current WIP hasn't moved in months. Maybe this'll jumpstart it. I'm 12K words in, but surely I can aim to write an additional 50K words. That's not really cheating, is it?

Yeah, I'll sign up at lunch time.

WTF? NaNoWriMo? Say it ain't so!

There's nothing that annoys me more than these NaNo blog posts that say "2843 words today! Woot!" - People, stringing words together on the page for the sake of stringing words together to make it to a finish line is not writing!

Writing is not a numbers game!

Discover the joys of outlining and you'll never get stalled on a writing project, or need this crazy NaNo thing.

Gerard, of all people! Jeesh!

NaNo chatter is just one reason I'm taking a blog hiatus in November - I have a term paper to write and NO - I won't be using NaNo to write it!

Josephine - Just noticed this comment. Gotta tell you, I absolutely agree with you. Writing is not a numbers game.

Unfortunately, I do tend to see an increasing wordcount as a mark of achievement, even though it rarely reflects the amount of work I've done. Some of my most satisfying moments have come from reducing the wordcount in redrafting. And I don't really believe in writer's block. I'm more inclined towards writer's laziness.

BUT...

Appointing November as my month to give up booze, late nights and crap TV while attempting to eat a bit better, get up before the kids do, and work harder, seems less daunting than changing my devilish ways for life. If the trade off is NaNo-hype and a dip in my usual cool levels, I'll take it. But I promise not to go into lolcat mode or anything like that. :P

Cheers

Josie - Like Gerard, I'm using it as a means to drive things along as the new novel starts to take shape. It's just something to help me focus.

I'm not signing up for Nano, I don't think. However, I am using it as a prompt to finish Paladin and get the revisions done.

I'm really pushing to get the 2,500 words a day to finish the chapters I deleted.
